The History: Many Ages have passed for the various worlds of the Althéa Campaign. One Age is common to all the worlds: The Age of Creation. Beyond this time, however, the experiences of the various worlds may differ. Some worlds still share common events and similar histories, while others have a unique history of their own. The following accounts, however, mostly refer to the World of Althéa in particular.

INTRODUCTION (HISTORY)

WORK IN PROGRESS (SUBJECT TO ALTERATION)

This history section covers both the overall Creation History of the campaign, as well as the Background History of the World of Althéa. For those interested in how the World of Althéa fits into the campaign's overall cosmology, then this section is for them. For those just interested in the more recent history (to do with what players have actually played in scenarios and modules), then they should refer to The Adventure section.

This section is divided into essays that help give more detailed background. Use the contents guide on the sidebar to navigate to various sections. Most of this information was written before any scenarios or modules were designed, as it forms the foundation on which the adventures are built. As such, the reader may find one or two references to some things they may not know as a player. Previously, I would have warned potential players to steer clear of reading anything that may spoil the game for them, but I now consider it useful background to those who like to read about such. Consider it that the reader's PC has a very high Lore skill.

The Ages Upon Althéa

(*) Some dates are roughly determined from this time upon Althéa.

(#) Moon Time is determined and used throughout civilised Althéa.

(+) Debacle Time is used in some places throughout Althéa.

The Age of Creation is common to all worlds and is prior to the count of time upon Althéa. Time is now measured from the Age of Moons and is considered Moon Time (M.T.) All time previous to Moon Time is considered Pre Moon Time (P.M.T.) Measurements of time before Moon Time were based on times of a kingdoms rule and upon the existence of certain events important to a particular race. Thus, no standard means of time was kept throughout the world. Events recorded in historical documents are calculated in the standard M.T. or P.M.T. notation. The P.M.T. dates are recorded as accurately as information could dictate. Some races base their standard time upon the year the moons collided into and changed the face of Althéa. Such races refer to the years as After the Debacle (A.D.) or Before the Debacle (B.D.). In calculating the year to M.T. simply add 777 years, 7 months and 7 days; as this is the time difference. There are even some references to time since The Darkening after it occurred in 1197 M.T. However, Moon Time remains the standard throughout the world.

COLOURS AND SHAPES (The Revelation of Adon.)

The Beginning

Before anything was known, there was only the void: A nothingness and an infinite blackness, devoid of any known form of life. Then, from somewhere within the void, or maybe from the void itself, something did arise: Consciousness. As the Consciousness revealed itself and its thoughts rose and multiplied, light began to cascade throughout the void with an awareness spreading throughout the darkness. The Consciousness was pure knowledge: An active, positive, creative force and its coming started the Age of Creation.

At this time, the Consciousness was without form, no more than a powerful entity of light, bursting with energy and undetermined purpose. However, from its brilliant pure light, colours were created, which through their interaction with each other created random patterns. Consciousness, (wanting to guide the colours), gave each colour a name so that each would know when it was being addressed. Then, through imparting knowledge and direction to the individual colours, the Consciousness was able to encourage them into making specific patterns of its own design. With further knowledge and instruction given to the colours, Consciousness was able to control the outline and shape of the patterns to a very fine detail, until, eventually, it was able to form the first pictures.

Then Consciousness viewed the emptiness of the void beyond its own light and told the colours to choose a shape of their own design and to fill the void with the most beautiful picture they could. So it was the colours chose the sphere, because its direction is not limited and its shape the least inhibited. Into the emptiness they “floated” the sphere, which they had filled with every colour. The design and creation of the colours went far beyond this though: On the sphere were other shapes of all designs and sizes, each of which had their own colours intricately combined. Consciousness deemed the work magnificent beyond compare and told the colours to fill the void with many such spheres and other such designs to complement the first. And so it was in this way that the stars and worlds were created, but, at this stage, only in a form of a three-dimensional picture, as substance had not yet been created.

Eventually, the colours turned to the Consciousness and asked what name they should use when approaching it. Without reflection the Consciousness answered, “I shall be called Adon, the Creator.” Then Adon slept.

SOUND AND SUBSTANCE (The Revelation of Eki.)

The Creation of the Elements

When Adon slept, Consciousness parted and gave way to Unconsciousness. This was also a force, but one without the same control and direction of Consciousness. It had its own powers of influence and awareness, but was considered dark, destructive and manipulative . It was still of Adon, yet a side of which Adon was unaware.

The Unconsciousness had felt restricted during the creation of colours and shapes. Now, as Adon rested, it was freed to impart its own influence. It had knowledge of sound: sound created by substance. It wanted to transform the creations of Adon with its knowledge of sound and substance, and so by its will, the spheres took on solidity in one form or another - and the substance, according to its shape and colour, made sound. The Unconsciousness witnessed how its substance had transformed the pictures and especially the three prime colours (those first created by Adon). From much of the colour Green was created the element of Earth, which, as it now smashed against the other colours and itself, gave off a great rumbling sound. Where mainly the colour Blue had been, the Unconsciousness witnessed the creation of the element of Water. As this moved and crashed against the other elements, it too gave sound. And in many of the places where the colour Red had been, Unconsciousness witnessed the creation of the element of Fire. This destructive element and the crackling sound of its presence greatly pleased the Unconsciousness.

Unconsciousness also witnessed the creation of the element of Air. Of all the elements, this appeared to be lacking in both colour and shape and yet at times could be substantial and create sound without any influence of Adon. However, Unconsciousness also considered Air as the manifestation of the purest white light and the one thing of Adon that could not be ruled by substance of Unconsciousness. Uncertain, it concluded that the element of Air was the tied essence of both Consciousness and Unconsciousness: A force created from both to be used by both yet ruled by neither.

The Unconsciousness was aware that the colours and shapes would always be the creations of Adon, and, as a consequence, desired creations of its own. To this end, the Unconsciousness manifested invisible spirits, born of its own desires and needs, without colour or shape. They were a reflection of the Unconsciousness, consisting of its dark, destructive and manipulative ways. And while in the presence of the Unconsciousness they would remain invisible spirits, this would not be the case in days to come when they would become known as the devils and demons of the worlds they sought to rule. And just like Adon, the Unconsciousness took unto itself a name so that its minions could address it properly. Addressing his new creations it said, "I shall be called Eki, the Lord of the Darkness."

Eki always strove to make its own influence felt separate from that which had been done during the time of Consciousness. Yet the influence of Consciousness was always in the works and contributions of Unconsciousness. In frustration, it started to use its force and powers to change, corrupt and destroy what had been done during the times of Consciousness, in anticipation that Adon would eventually leave the worlds to the sole control of Eki.

In a time to come, men and elves of greater knowledge and wisdom would see how Adon and Eki were of one and the same being and, at times, rightly or wrongly, would refer to "Adoneki" when talking of the Creator.

FLORA AND FAUNA (The Revelation of Vol.)

The Creation of Animals and Plants

When Adon awoke after its first rest, Consciousness was again in control and it could see what had happened to its creation while it had slept. For the first time, Adon reflected upon itself, and what it saw, and at this moment, not only recognized its own Unconsciousness, but also a third side of its own existence: Subconscious. Adon became aware of all three states of itself and also knew that as long as one existed, so would the other two. Adon could foresee the trouble this would cause ahead of its time and happening.

It became clear that Subconscious was the communicator and judge between the Conscious and Unconscious. It was to be the part that lightened the dark paths of its Unconsciousness and form the shadows in the light of its Consciousness. Both Adon and Eki would reflect with Subconscious with knowledge and understanding that they would receive a fair answer. If ever a time came when either Adon or Eki threatened the existence of the other, then Subconscious would aid the one who was being threatened and so balance would always be maintained.

In the same way that both Adon and Eki took to themselves a name, so did Subconscious. It became known as Vol and it also created helpers. The minions of Vol aided both Adon and Eki and became known as Adonvol or Ekivol according to the ones they aided. Vol itself, never actually took up on either side for any period of time longer than the other and was therefore considered true neutral.

Both Adon and Eki continued to create and corrupt respectively under the careful scrutiny of Vol. Adon gave his creations the gift of life so that these life created beings, which were called animals or fauna, could flee from the oppressing elements of Eki. Adon also gave regenerative powers to other colours already on the spheres, so that they could grow again after any turmoil and destruction of Eki's most destructive elements. These were the plants or flora of the spheres. As always, where Adon’s work was, however, so was the malicious work of Eki. Eki made monsters of destruction from the life. They would kill and destroy animals that fled in fear. Weeds and other poisonous plants grew and intermingled with the pleasant flora.

LAW AND CHAOS

The Birth of Men and Other Races

Then Adon decided to bring a new force into being, that of Law. In order to empower Law, Adon created what are classified as the major life forms (races). Men and elves were the first, but there were more to follow. Adon created them with a spirit akin to his own, but in substance as was dictated by Vol. To them, Adon gave knowledge and understanding. Adon planned these races to bring the new force of Law into the worlds they inhabited. However, Eki, in opposition, brought into existence a contending force, that of Chaos. Through the judgement of Vol, Eki was allowed to offer this force as an alternative to the races. Thus, men and elves, like all major races, are free to choose between the two major forces ... or so it would at first seem. But in time, learned men would soon begin to understand a greater truth.

Both Adon and Eki turned their attentions to the major races. Whenever they went onto the spheres, both appeared in substance and colour as a male form of their creations. For this reason, Adon and Eki are considered masculine.

THE FIRST KINGDOMS

The Creation of the Outer Planes

And so, out of creation came the forces for destruction and yet from out of the destruction came more creation. So it was, must be and always will be, with Vol always remaining judge. Eventually, throughout every world, the followers of Adon and Eki broke into open war against each other. Each world has its own history of war and downfall at this time, but there is one common outcome that links them all: The Outer Planes were formed.

So much destruction was occurring throughout the worlds that Vol restored a balance by aiding Adon. Guided by Vol, Adon brought out of the worlds all those with greatest power and gave them new planes of existence of their own. After this was done, Eki was then guided by Vol to do the same, enforcing Eki's greatest followers to share the same new planes. The worlds were to be left alone with only the meek to start again. There would still be wars, but world devastation would not occur if both Adon and Eki limited the power open to the major races. The creation of the Outer Planes marked the end of the Age Of Creation.

The Birth of Gods

The Birth Of Gods

NON HUMAN DEITIES

At the time of Law and Chaos, Adon and Eki made many visits to the worlds and the newly created inhabitants. Each was trying to guide the races along different paths. To this end, each took on many forms. Sometimes they appeared as men under their true names, but mostly, and especially as the time approached that of the First Kingdoms, they appeared as great beings or monsters of the race they appeared to. This explains how each race appeared to have a varying number of gods with differing myths and legends. Each was dependant upon which form Adon or Eki took as time passed.

By the time of the First Kingdoms, most of the non-human deities were steadfast. The races had settled and so had their beliefs. At this time, both Adon and Eki sent minions in the same guise as they had taken to represent the gods that the different races believed in. This is how the different gods (see “Deities & Demigods”) of the non-humans came about. Only men, at this stage, still believed in and understood the concept of the one God, Adoneki; although most would only recognize Adon or Eki. By the end of the time of the First Kingdoms and the creation of the Outer Planes, even the main beliefs of men had changed.

MEN MAKE NEW GODS

The Power Wars that ended the Age of Creation was the turning point for the beliefs of men. It was during the early days of the new age that followed, that the clerics of some worlds recognized that their leaders of old could still be contacted through "prayer" and act as the new source for their lost power. For this reason, men turned to them and held them up as the new gods of their world. However, there are still some people who are wise enough to recognize that these “gods” are merely links to the true God, Adoneki.

THE OUTER PLANES

At the same time as the leaders of the different worlds were given and sent to the Outer Planes, so too were the minions and helpers of Adon and Eki who had represented the deities of the non-humans. They would share the realms of the gods of men and have a common grounds of approach. These planes became the home for the “gods” and would continue to home more “gods” with the passing of time and the creation of more worlds and races.

Magik Through The Ages

Magik Through The Ages

The “Soul Shaker” scenario marks the dividing point between two eras in the Althéa Campaign. Upon the world of Althéa, this point in time is known as The Darkening to the majority of its inhabitants, or simply as The Changing to others. Prior to this time, Colour Magik was the main source of power in the world, whereas after this time, the peoples of Althéa refer to something called Life Magik instead and also to something called The Life Essence. The Life Essence is actually an original component of Soul Magik that has been reintroduced since The Darkening.

The historians of Althéa originally thought the next period of time would be called the Time of Wisdom within The Age of Recreation. However, The Darkening brought about such drastic alterations to magik and life in so many worlds that it demanded the historians designate the beginning of a new age. In Althéa this new age is known as The Age of New Life. Here is how the magik has changed throughout the ages:

SOUL MAGIK: During the Age of Creation there was Soul Magik, also referred to as Pure Colour Magik, because it was magik in its purest form and anybody could use Soul Magik no matter what there “class” or “status”.

CLASSIC MAGIK/MAGIC: During The Age of The Moons there was Classic Magik or what on some worlds is simply called Magic. Upon Althéa, this magik was first rediscovered through 'rituals with gods' (by clerics) or through studying alchemy & the moons (by wizards). Its connection to the earlier Soul Magik was not understood by all worlds at this time and this is why some worlds referred to it as magic to differentiate it from the energies they had prior to the disappearance of Soul Magik.

COLOUR MAGIK: In some worlds (including Althéa) the Classic Magik was removed or changed again, and the peoples had to learn how to recall spells in different ways once more. (In Althéa, this marked The Age of Recreation.) Normally, these worlds understood the connection between the original Soul Magik and subsequent changes to the Classic Magik, as they could see the common theme throughout the various changes that had affected the Magik: Colour and Light.

LIFE MAGIK: At The Darkening, the energy behind Colour Magik is made totally clear to all worlds to which The Darkening occurred. (In Althéa, this marked The Age of New Life.) It is quickly understood that the colours behind the magik are more than energy forces; they are part of Life itself! The original magik was called Soul Magik for a good reason: The energy (made up from distinctive components, including colours) of which magik is formed, is, in fact, the Essence of Life, and it is Life that is the common theme throughout all forces of magik!
